INTRODUCTION/HISTORY:

            The Las Lajas Sanctuary is basically a church built in 1905 and was then re-built in 1949 due to damaged sides. The history is based on a story or a myth of 1754, when two women (a mother along with her deaf-mute daughter) while crossing the narrow area came across the intense storm. The daughter who was deaf pointed some lightning point to her mother and both when reached a cave they saw the image of Virgin Mary (The mother of Hazrat Eesa/Jesus) on the walls of that cave. The image/picture of the great Virgin Mary is still visible inside the cave several feet inside. So this site is considered to be a holy site and a lot of pilgrims visit this place.The present style of the church is Gothic and it took almost 33 years to complete the structure. The word Laja stands for a sedimentary rock of slate shaped.

EXACT LOCATION:

               The sanctuary is located on 130 ft heightened bridge upon the river Guaitara. It is in the southern  Colombian Department of Narino and is built inside the canyon. So exactly this place is on the boarder of Ecuador and Colombia.

HOW TO REACH?

            To visit such a historical place you have to reach the Lpiales a samll city of Colombia. The major city near Lapiales is Papayan and it takes almost 8 hours to reach Lapiales from Papayan. You can cover this distance through local buses or hire a taxi. Its completely free inside the the sanctuary and you can enjoy the whole place.
